Double seminar on corpora

The research group LaMoRe will present a double seminar on corpora on Friday February 15, 2019 from 12:15 to 14:00:

12:15 Daniela Gîfu: An Insight into the Romanian Lexical Resources RODICA & CoRoLa
Two different corpora on Romanian will be presented: (1) CoRoLA – Contemporary Romanian Language, and (2) RODICA – ROmanian DIachonic Corpus with Annotations. Insights will be given in their construction and use. See also the NLP resources at UAIC.

13:15 Seong Cho: Development and Annotation of a Corpus on Rumors and Speculations
The aim of this research is identifying rumors and speculations in the news that indicate that an acquisition event might occur in the future, e.g. “Apple is thinking about acquiring Tidal” and “Apple might acquire Tidal”. An approach toward annotation of a corpus with such sentences will be presented.

Guest researcher from Romania

Daniela GifuDaniela Gîfu, associate professor at “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași, is on a visit to Bergen. She currently does research and teaches in computational linguistics and language technology. She also has a background in media and journalism, with a focus on political discourse. She is vice-president of the Union of Professional Journalists and is also an acclaimed author of poetry and essays. She will stay until the end of February 2019. Daniela will briefly present herself and her work on Thursday Jan. 31 from 11:15 to 12 at HF:326. [link to pdf of presentation]

Guest lecture by Murat Orhun

Murat Orhun (İstanbul Bilgi University) will give a guest lecture on Thursday January 24, 2019 at 10:15 in HF:326.

Machine Translation from Uzbek to Uyghur

Uzbek and Uyghur are Turkic languages. They will be compared with respect to alphabet, morphology, syntax and word categories. The vocabulary of the two languages shows some commonalities. Tools for vocabulary research and morphological analysis will be demonstrated.

New associate professor at UiB

Vadim Kimmelman joined the Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies on January 1, 2019. He is a linguist working primarily on the grammar of sign languages. He speaks Russian, English and Dutch and is of course learning Norwegian now.
